Chapter 4

She couldn’t breathe. Talen’s cold, thin lips sucked the heat out in an instant. His heated body pressed up against her, while one of his hands held the nape of her neck. The other slid down her back, crushing Leiv against his lean frame. Their kiss was carnal and unlike anything she had ever felt. Not only had every sensation seemed different, but their intimate act felt unfamiliar. A jolt of lightning spread through their mingling lips, sending a strong current of energy down with it as her body soaked it up. The kiss was hungry, like he had been starved for warmth all these years. A horrible thought occurred, forcing her to freeze.

Talen had stolen her first kiss.

It seemed childish, but the thought of sharing something sacred –like two people coming together for a private act– with someone like him, made Leiv feel degraded and violated. What made everything even more disgusting was the fact that she might actually be enjoying the forced treatment. He was vile she had to admit, but their sharing of power through a kiss was so sensual, and the power that crawled down was amazing.

Before their lips embrace could last any longer, she wriggled out of his grasps and shoved him away. “Stay back,” Leiv said, wiping her mouth as her chests rose and dipped heavily.

Talen chuckled, as he tried closing the void between them. “Your mouth and body say differently.” Before the prince could reach out for her, a body slammed right into his side, causing him to crash onto the hard floor.

“Don’t you dare touch her!” Kenji was enraged. His handler had completely lost their grip on the scrawny lad, attempting to apprehend him with flailing arms. This was a side she had never seen in her friend before, and was right to think that the journey had somewhat changed him. Through all the pain and sorrow the innkeeper’s boy was gradually turning into a man. “She’s not a pet, nor someone who would ever want to be with you.” He landed a punch right on Talen’s cheek.

The prince trembled with anger; the energy surging through him was immense. She’d never felt such rich power flowing through anything but her dragon. How strong magic like that could lay dormant and hidden, was a feat even she couldn’t achieve. Talen had easily been able to feel the static of her magic when she casted, but through all the years his had remained completely invisible.

“Who do you think you are?” Talen’s voice had lost its steadiness, breaking Leiv out of her still posture. He shot a hand out, wrapping his palm around the width of Kenji’s neck as the prince stood and gripped tighter. “I don’t appreciate being made into a fool.”

“Stop!” Leiv shouted.

Her words made no difference to the aggravated prince. He threw Kenji to the far wall where he landed on the dusty cot with a harsh slam, causing the makeshift bed to disassemble and crash. Kenji groaned, trying his hardest to roll over and sit up.

Making a beeline for Kenji, she was grabbed by the waist by the large escort who failed to apprehend him previously. The man’s hold on her tightened, refusing to release yet another captive.

“Let me go.” Her voice boiled with contained fury, as she tried to push the anger down. “I’m warning you.”

The guard refused to release her, attempting to get back on Talen’s good graces. Her heart leapt out of her chest, calling out to her best friend. Trying once again to wriggle from the large man’s arms, she managed some slack but not enough to escape. The prince was getting closer, forcing Leiv to take extremes. She placed her loose hands onto the escort and pushed her magic out. The fire transferred onto his skin, making the flesh underneath sizzle. Once the large guard felt the burn he growled and quickly released her.
