"A Call to Arms"

by Nina Boyd

Consider this chilling tale, if you will

Of a man who was taken quite seriously ill

From the stress and the deadening strain doctors say,

Of doing nothing he wanted--every week day.

Have you ever heard of acute officitis?

Well that's what he had, along with brain atrophitus.

The doctor he said, "These diseases are heinous!

I fear your condition might soon be contagious!

Quickly, now tell me son, what do you do, eight to five daily on Sixth Avenue?"

Well, the answer he heard was quite sad indeed

"Doctor!" said the man, "hear my call and take heed:

My entire existence in this work-a-day world

Is vacuous and shallow!" (His lip was now curled):

"My job is depressing, pointless and hollow: in paper and numbers I helplessly wallow!"

"Is there nothing redeeming in this office, my lad?"

the doctor responded, pen poised at note pad.

"Nothing, no nothing!" the man cried in frustration,

"This job is a part of a lackluster nation!"

The doctor jumped up, an answer at hand,

"I know how you might leave this corporate wasteland!

Your diseases are curable with one simple change--

Get out of that office, any way you arrange!

Don't sit and become a dry pointless slob; find something that matters:

A creative-type job!

And listen, all you suff'ring patients of mine,"

Cried the doctor, whose face looked now quite divine

"Turn this money based system completely around!

Artists, healers, and do-ers start breaking new ground!

Wilt at your desks or else work for a cause! This is a call to arms:

TAKE YOUR LIVES OFF OF PAUSE!"
