Xianxia (仙侠) stories have elements of fantasy, magic, demons and immortals. Inspired by Daoism, themes often deal with Chinese folklore and mythology.

Xuanhuan (玄幻) stories are fantasy based involving many of the same magical elements but adds new and foreign elements. The stories are more removed from historical settings and context.
