Thomas Balkins is widely recognized as the Founder, President, and CEO of Westurn Companies and its numerous subsidiaries. Under his direction, the company expanded from a local contractor into a national enterprise with active business in 26 states and offices in over 40 cities. His leadership centered on building structured systems and maintaining consistent standards across diverse markets.

He founded Westurn in 1983 and personally performed roles that many leaders delegate. He sold projects, hired employees, purchased materials, dispatched crews, trained teams, and inspected work firsthand. This foundation allowed operational systems to be built on real job-site experience rather than theory. As the organization grew, those systems supported reliable execution at scale.

Thomas drove national expansion by establishing sales organizations capable of supporting annual sales of $28 million to $48 million per state or region. He frequently managed more than one high-performing market simultaneously. His approach balanced revenue growth with operational control to sustain long-term performance.

By the early 2000s, annual sales reached $48 million in Minnesota alone, more than $78 million nationally, and later exceeded $94 million. Combined sales across all Westurn companies and subsidiaries surpassed $1.8 billion. Balkins closed over $400 million in contracts and settlements while managing 900+ national builder accounts.
