Thanks for including Shaman, @TheAestheteMagazine ! This looks like a pretty useful resource for finding new stories to read, all nicely sorted by genre!

So... instead of taking about three months to post Black Wolf, it took about one. LOL

Why? Because of one enthusiastic reader demanding more. And she has a point. Some books really do not show themselves to best advantage when read a chapter or so a day (or even less frequently) instead of being binged in larger chunks. Black Wolf has a lot of moving parts (more than I'd be likely to include in a novel I wrote today, although somehow it worked) and it's hard to keep track of all of it when relevant details might have turned up two weeks ago.

It's rather frustrating, choosing between pleasing the algorithm by doing steady measured posts, or getting a complete work released as quickly as possible to be enjoyed the way it best can. I'll probably continue choosing the latter over the former with completed novels.

In other news, I'm dropping out of the ONC and abandoning Catfish. My apologies to those who read the first chapter and were intrigued. (Transformation, shapeshifiting, and varied outside-the-box play with gender and sexuality is pretty common in my other work, however.) I'm frankly not great at length restrictions or deadlines, and the one prompt I thought I could work with still felt forced and the characters just wouldn't come to life for me. Late winter is when my depression is strongest, and this is absolutely the worst time of year for me to try to create anything I'm remotely happy with under conditions like that.

Instead, I'll be working on revisions for the second volume of Moonblood, which I don't expect to take long, and then swapping to revisions on an older novel I love deeply and think I finally found a way to fix.

I'm wishing all ONC participants the best possible luck, and I'm going to try to get back to reading what others are doing. <3

@ToriHope- Oh, good lord, please don't feel bad! My cats have me very well trained to respond to "More!?!? Now?" by immediately providing it. LOL It's not going anywhere, and I absolutely understand being busy. You've got university to cope with, after all. I'd hate for you to feel like you *had* to read anything of mine by any particular time, instead of just whenever works for you and you can (I hope!) enjoy it without stress.

As for me... the mood stuff is normal for me at this time of year. This year isn't too bad, all told, since I'm mostly still writing. Just at my pace.

Look after yourself, okay? I'm looking forward to reading what you've got on the go, but it can wait. Your mental health matters. *cyber-hugs* (unless I shouldn't)

ToriHope-

@prysmcat You posted Black Wolf so quickly! Sorry for not having read more of it yet. :( Been a bit busy and overwhelmed... but over the summer I definitely plan on binge reading it! I hope winter passes by quickly so you can feel better as soon as possible! ♥ I wish you the best.

@DomiSotto Thanks. :-) I feel bad because people were interested, but sometimes, it just doesn't work. I'm glad you decided to take the chance and it looks like yours is racing along nicely. That's awesome! :-D Winter's going to end sooner or later... Hugs right back at you!

Thanks so much for adding Lazarus to reading list. We ONC writers gotta stick together, you know?

prysmcat

@AndrewHeard8 Absolutely we need to back each other up! And I'm going to get over there and read it as soon as possible! :-) Thanks for starting a thread for sharing ONC works.

It feels like half of Wattpad is saying this, but...

Hey, folks! I'm taking part in the Open Novella Contest. :-) There won't be any interruption in the uploads of Moonblood twice a week, Black Wolf daily, or Transposition once a week, because that's already written. What I will be doing is working on a brand-new novella.

I'm going to try to keep posting chapters as I go, which is new for me - I normally keep anything I write private until it's complete, since I don't know what's going to happen until it happens, but the ONC is all about challenging yourself. I'm actually sticking with my usual genre - fantasy that incorporates varied gender and sexuality - but writing to a prompt and a deadline is new, and I'm very bad at writing "short" so I'm going to feel challenged anyway. LOL

Anyway, I'm wishing everyone else involved in the ONC joyful writing and great success, and if you haven't looked yet, there are a couple of SYS threads where you can find other ONC projects. I encourage checking them out to see what writers do when they aren't committing themselves to full-length works and let themselves experiment!

And if you'd like to see what kind of peculiar story I made out of one of the ONC prompts, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Lots of Black Wolf today!

The chapter is over 6K words, so I split it into three parts - and I'm posting them all at once, because you're not going to want to be left hanging at the end of the first part! For at least the next couple of weeks, there won't (shouldn't) be any extra chapters, although I've proven that I'm very bad at following plans. LOL

Anyway, enjoy today's long episode. Jesse's back in hot water again. Oh, and you get to meet Shaine, which a couple of people have expressed an interest in doing. :-)

PS, Moonblood is still uploading on schedule, if you want high fantasy shapeshifters, and Transposition and the kidnapped faelings will be temporarily down to one post a week.

prysmcat

By request, I reconsidered the posting schedule. I've decided that the Sphynx articles are not going to count as full posts all by themselves (well, they are typically only about 600 words), and I'll post those with the chapter that comes after. I haven't decided yet about chapters that have been split into 2 or 3 parts - they're generally not broken into multiple shorter chapters becaause a lot is happening that goes together. I may post all parts of a chapter together, to keep from interrupting in mid-action, but I don't want anyone overwhelmed, either. I'm open to thoughts on that.

Yes, I'm inconsistent. The good news is, there's no reason for posting too slowly, just possibly speeding things up here and there. LOL

prysmcat

I think I messed up the schedule and all for the first few posts of Black Wolf. Please don't ask me to explain what combination of technical glitches and sleep-deprived reasoning led to that because I actually haven't the foggiest. LOL This means that Chapter One, parts 1 through 3, are all up, and also Chapter Two, a little sooner than planned. Sorry for any confusion (I'm confused too!) and I will attempt to keep it at a more consistent one post per day now. :-)

With Shaman completed (yay!), on to the next project to upload!

Black Wolf is always going to hold a special place in my heart. It was the first novel I ever finished (at least, that I'll admit to). It's also how I learned to edit, thanks to an amazing writer who took the time to go through it ruthlessly and give me his thoughts - devastating to 21-year-old me, but man, did I learn a lot of valuable lessons from it!

Would mid-40s me do a few things differently? Well, yes, of course, but I'm not going to. It's got elves (some with fire magic), dryads (some with healing gifts), humans (some with magical abilities), Bad Things that want to eat the magic and emotions of all the above, werewolves with the ability and drive to kill the Bad Things, a largely-pagan village that organizes itself into magically-linked intimate covens of groups of friends, a couple of villains who at least think they're unconnected to each other, demons from another plane of reality, and a teenaged protagonist who has no idea what the hell is going on and how his life went from depressing to bewildering. Changing it would wreck it. LOL

Have fun! At one post a day, I expect this to take about three months. :-D

@SarahSokol5 That is 62 chapters, seven of which were long enough to be broken into 2 or 3 parts to bring them to a more reasonable length for Wattpad, plus a dozen or so short gossipy local newspaper articles scattered through, and one journal interlude. Some chapters are actually pretty short too. I am very bad at "short" - I think Shaman is the shortest stand-alone thing I've ever written, honestly, with the fewest characters and most straightforward plot. LOL

I wonder how long it will take me to get impatient and try to find an excuse to increase the frequency? Not that I know myself or anything... ;-)

Anyway. Fingers crossed it lives up to expectations!

Mmkay, so... I had planned on releasing Shaman one chapter a day for 40 days. Somehow, a heartfelt "What happens next? Must know!" comment appearing while I was looking at one of my cats being cute lowered my resistance. Long story short, if you're interested, it is now available in its entirety.

Trans shaman Vixen and her shapeshifting puma Dayr are on what looked initially like a very simple mission: Vixen's best friend from her earlier life is in danger but doesn't know it, and if she's there, she can protect him. It doesn't stay that simple for long, though, and Vixen's soon facing some difficult decisions she didn't expect.
