Woohoo! Death & Magic has reached 200,000 reads on Wattpad!

To celebrate, I'm giving away a free copy of the audiobook, as read by me. The first person to reply to this message and say they want the freebie gets it. Simples!

If you're not sure whether you want to listen to 11 hours of me reading, there's a spoiler-free 5-minute sample here: http://www.pembers.net/wd/dm-sample.mp3

          The small print:

If you want the free audiobook, say so in your reply. If you just congratulate me on reaching this milestone (not that there's anything wrong with that :-) ) you won't be eligible for the prize.

The free audiobook will come from Audible in the US or the UK. You don't need to have an Audible account already, but if you don't live in one of those countries, it might not be possible for you to get the download. When replying to this message, please say whether you want the US or UK download, because the download codes are specific to the country.

          Thanks!

          Steven

Book launch party today!

The book is "So, You Say I Can’t Vote!: Frances Connelly: The working-class woman’s route to the vote" by Sheena Macleod and Laura Linham. Frances Connelly was one of the first women to vote in a UK parliamentary election - seven years before it became legal. This book is about the role that Frances and other working-class women played in getting (some) women in the UK the right to vote in 1918.

Come and join in the discussion about it today on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/320841588521351/328656087739901/

Or if you'd rather just check out the book, go here: https://amzn.to/2Dml7aP

(Full disclosure: I was a beta reader for this book.)

          Thanks.

If you're in or near Redbridge, Essex, England on Saturday 29th September, I'll be taking part in an event at Redbridge Library that showcases the work of authors from Essex and Hertfordshire. We'll be doing readings and selling signed copies of our books from 1pm to 4pm. The best part is it's free (unless you want to buy a book, of course). Show your interest by adding yourself to the Facebook event, or just turn up on the day. https://www.facebook.com/events/278042036146944/?active_tab=about

Looking forward to seeing you there!

And now it's my turn to interview Lauren Alder. She's the author of The Codex of Desire, a "tragic tale of prehistoric love" amongst intelligent feathered dinosaurs.

The book is a time-travelling adult science fiction novel about tragic dinosaur love triangles.

This is the three-sentence pitch: “Love and violence, war and lust, lies and betrayal — even intelligent feathered dinosaurs fell prey to such destructive impulses, more than 67 million years ago. Girn'ash, a cunning female slave, falls in love with a dashing military prisoner and will do anything in her power to win his freedom. But Girn'ash's queen is determined to coerce the handsome warrior into her harem, and when so many savage desires collide it might doom an entire civilization to nuclear extinction.”

I'm this week's guest on Lucas Spangler's First Chapter podcast. After I read the first chapter of Escape Velocity, Lucas and I talk about the inspiration behind my writing, the relationship between writing and software, and surprise endings. (Parental advisory: there is a bit of swearing in the book.)

You can find it on iTunes here - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/first-chapter/id1415569617?mt=2 (my episode is number 13) or on Libsyn here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/firstchapter/Steven_J_Pemberton_-_First_Chapter_Episode_13.mp3
