a small snort came from him. “yeah, right. you— talking to girls.” there was a playful tone to his voice. he knew how his buddy acted around girls. and after what happened with sylvia, pony thought that johnny would be even more nervous around them. he couldn’t blame the poor boy, though. greaser girls, the only girls that’d talk to them, were tough and mouthy. helł, they even threw pony off himself at times. at johnny’s remark about his height, pony couldn’t help but to laugh. “shoot, johnny. i’m probably already taller,” he kidded light-heartedly, nudging him with his elbow. the smile on his face faltered when johnny told him about his parents, and for a while he went silent. until he sighed. “i don’t know how you manage with— that,” he said in reference to johnny’s home life. all the beatings, punishments, yelling, but johnny still was here. and definitely not in one piece, but still here.

“they are?” said an astounded ponyboy. there was a cheeky grin on his face at the news— talking to johnny did get his spirits up, and after another argument with darry this was exactly what he needed.
he listened to his friend intently. every word that came out of his mouth was important to pony, because he knew johnny could get awful quiet with some people. and for johnny to be open with him made pony feel special. “huh. that sounds cool. when’s it comin’ out, do you know?”
at his request, ponyboy nodded briskly. “of course, johnnycake. you know you’re always welcome over at our place.” hesitantly, he added, “your folks fightin’ again?” it was a dumb question, really. johnny’s folks were always fighting and never seemed to stop.
