I am an author, environmentalist, music teacher and mother. I love nature and wild spaces. In my writing I explore relationships between people and nature. I live in the interior of British Columbia, in Canada.
The Sarah Spellings series was inspired by my daughters, who are adventurous young adults. I found myself imagining what life might be like for them in a post-climate-change world. What if roads were cracked, bridges toppled, and no one could travel by car? How would young people adapt, where would they live, what would they eat? There might be a segment of society who want a return to the security of grocery stores and gas-powered cars, called Puffers, and others who want to build a different kind of civilization, known as Greenstas.
Sarah Spellings, I decided, would have unique abilities. This planet has true magic in its forces of nature. Sarah discovers she has inherited the power to harness natural phenomena, to make things grow, and to command weather. Her adventure begins near her childhood home, on the west coast of what we call Canada. Electricity is scarce, so the night is dark, and a ferocious storm blusters in from the ocean...
