For some, I believe it's the thrill of it all to do the opposite of what is expected- some like to assert what they feel is their right to do as they please. Then there's pure emotion, among other things! Or maybe not!
What about Jane? Does she even want to marry you? Or is she planning on marrying the duke and have you on the side, so she can have wealth and love?

Oh wow! No wonder! She must be stressed to have such a responsibility at such an age. She no doubt focuses so much on them, she can't really think much on herself.
