Smile for the Coup D'état
Broke, drunk, and caught up in the mayhem of a military coup d'état in Thailand, Peter Harden and his dangerously charismatic friend, Joseph Tanner, double down on their pursuit of destructive obsessions. But the crimes that they have committed together are becoming increasingly hard to hide under the tumultuous new political order.
Pressured by guilt, envy, and chronic intoxication, the pair arrive at their own idiosyncratic paths of atonement. Peter becomes increasingly in thrall to a local bar girl whose feelings towards him are stubbornly opaque, while Joseph - a disillusioned ex-journalist with a warped perspective on twenty-first-century morality - attempts to abide evermore stringently by his own brutal ethical code.
When Joseph's status as a journalist is made known to the wrong sort of people, the pair find themselves sucked into Thailand's newly violent power games. Alternatively thrilled and appalled by their descent into the gangsterism of Bangkok's underworld, Peter and Joseph reluctantly discover the depths of their reliance on one another. Yet when the consequences of their criminal hedonism finally catch up with them, one man emerges with an unexpected - and unearned - fame, leaving the other as the only person who knows the savage truth.
Mixing the excitement and drama of pulp fiction with the nuance and lyricism of literary fiction, Smile for the Coup D'état is a fast-paced story of what happens to travellers on the beaten track when personal and political crises collide.
