Even after two years, the death of her fiancée still hung over Adelaide in a thick cloud. She hadn’t worn color since; a smile was rare and she had no plans on ever loving again. Thomas had been the only one for her, but now he was gone. When Adelaide is offered a job as a headmistress at a boarding school in the new world, she quickly packs her bags and boards the next ship to Canada, which happens to be a naval vessel. In cramped quarters, the grumpy and cross Captain Summer makes life very difficult and Adelaide struggles with life aboard a ship. Rocky seas and storms aren’t the only difficulties they will face in a journey that could push them together or tear them apart.

Her being at the marriage age I suppose they would wish for her to marry soon...let's not forget that at the age of 26/27 a single woman was already considered an old maid. Furthermore women rarely married for love 'forget the old, and invite in the new' is probably what most people think
