Ash was invisible to everyone, save Netta. Sometimes, out of the corner of her eyes, she thought that he looked like a tall, gaunt creature made of sharp angles. And yet -
He spoke softly, lovingly, to her, when no one else would.
Grown up, the taboo creature that was once her heart's desire is now only her curse. It is the reason for her exile from her family home, why she lives in disgrace.
Monsters once came very close to killing human-kind. Now, they're relegated to the role of parasites - if that. They're creatures that are so weak with the soft death of magic that the most they can hope for is to be chosen. Chosen as an engine of magic to be used by the very sub-race of female humans who've gained complete control over them.
Although Ashwood promises satiation of Netta's most hushed desires, she is fully aware of the danger It poses. And that she can never trust the Monster, or risk viewing It as anything more than a potential parasitic infection. A parasite capable of giving Its Host the one thing Netta has never felt in all of her miserable, lonesome life.
Still, there are caveats to this power. Monsters are legendary for their abilities at manipulation, as well as for their wrathful natures. Possessions are the risk for Witches who surrender both their will and their forbidden hungers to Monsters.
Ash has done nothing to save Netta from the impression that It wants anything other than to possess her. Soon, however, Netta finds herself with no other option other than to take a leap of faith that risks more, even, than her life.
