How do you build on the plot and characters in a book? Like how do you make it lengthy, because I write a couple of chapters then run out of ideas?

Hey Natalie. I just started writing a mystery/thriller and although I'm all for the scares, I have no idea whatsoever how to write one. Do you have any tips for me?
