Lisette Travieso, the youngest child in a house of three Cuban-American children, has been living by the Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake  that has been a housing place for families of their relatives in the war ever since she was ten years old. Now sixteen, her father is being shipped off to Iraq, and her mother does not know if her last child still living in the house will be safe in this time of war. After many attempts, Lisette receives a scholarship to a growing boarding school in the coast of Maine, where she meets the strangest roommate, Sadie Merrick, with an even stranger life and past. One day, a ragged and old Count of Monte Cristo book appears from an anonymouse sender with notes written in red that lead the two into events in the criminal underworld…


Sadie Merrick has had her share of an adventurous life.  Everything is so boring and overly predictable, according to her.  She has has enough of the unduly protective watch kept over her day and night, and spending every day on the outside looking in has become a long-lasting distraction from her life. That is, until a small book appears one day from an anonymous sender, and her whole world begins to unravel...
