Hours of Gold [Wattys 2016]
Following the death of his mentor, Joao seeks answers in the world around him only to arrive at even more questions than before. Overcome with anxiety, he breaks down in the middle of his big Christmas concert and disappears into the night. With no muse, no home and no one to guide him, Joao sets off on his journey of self-discovery and recovery. Along the way he meets Maddie and Ava, two girls with personalities as different as night and day, who convince him that life really is worth living.
"I want her to walk through the door and hug my sadness away but no one comes, so I wrap myself in my blanket and cry myself to sleep even though it's noon and I just woke up."
Hours of Gold is a fictional tale that is derived from my own experiences with mental health and the discoveries I've made along the way. It may, at times, be challenging and uncomfortable to read.
