"On the ground, there are no laws."
For 97 years the Earth was believed to be uninhabitable, until one hundred teenagers were sent to the ground to find out that the human race can finally return to their home.
But, there are unknown dangers lurking in the shadows. Survivors of the nuclear war that have been living on the ground view the teenagers as invaders, and tensions quickly begin to rise between the two peoples. In the middle of all of the politics and fighting is a girl named Dakota. The soon-to-be leader of her Grounder clan.
Everything changes when Dakota learns shocking truths about her people; that they were the ones behind her father's sudden and terrible death. Out of anger and betrayal, Dakota flees her clan and is captured by the hundred.
After realizing that she and the hundred have a common enemy, Dakota agrees to help them beat the Grounders, but can she really betray her own people; her own family when she is thrown into battle against them?
And what happens when the Grounder finds herself falling for one of the leaders of the sky people? She was always taught that love is weakness, but if love is weakness then why does she find strength in her feelings for the boy from the sky?
Can love really overcome all? Can Dakota face her haunting past without destroying her future?
Surviving just became so much more complicated.
