Forest of Teeth
Joy were raised in a small village in the Forest of Teeth.
She was learned that you could never go outside the fences, were the unholy lived.
The people in the village has been living there for centuries, ever since the returning, when the infection started to kill men, and bringing them back to life.
The infection has no cure and you can never run away from it.
"Do you know about the sea?" My mother used to ask, as a child who were born and raised in a village were they teach you about everything besides things before the return, I used to shake my head.
Mother always showed me a picture of a little girl, standing by the "sea", as my mother said it was.
"She's beautiful." I used to say, looking at her long hair that was braided to the sides and the way her blue dress blew in the wind.
"It's your grandmother's, grandmother's grandmother. When she was just a little girl, like you." She used to smile, as she talked lovely to me.
"The sea is so big, no one knows if it has an end." She would say.
"Before the return, people would sail over the sea, but they had to sail for weeks and weeks to actually get to land." I would always smile, hearing the stories my mother told me, that her mother told her.
"Before the return, there were cities filled with people. Over thousands of people walked on the same streets as others. The houses were big buildings, skyscrapers, that you couldn't see the tip of, because it reached the clouds." I would always sit there; listen to mother's voice as she talked. I would retell her stories to my friend, Irene. She would laugh at me, telling me that it was just imaginary things. That it didn't exist.
"Sea?" She would say in her smile. "Wouldn't it be impossible for so much water to be on one place?" She would laugh at my hopes that it would be out there, away from all of the unholy. A place that hasn't been affected by the return.
