When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to live in Japan on exchange. Although INK is set in Shizuoka, I lived in Takatsuki, Osaka, and had the best host family in the world. We laughed together, travelled around Japan, and built a bond with each other that will last a lifetime.



Osaka is one of Japan's largest cities, having about 3 million people. It was here I got my first taste of the ancient side of Japan, with a trip to the looming Osaka Castle. We also spent a lot of time in Kyoto, the old capital of the country, and in Nara, also a capital city 1,300 years ago, now filled with temples and deer.



Nara is really magical. It's surreal to walk around surrounded by hundreds of deer roaming the streets.  There are street vendors selling shika senbei, special crackers you can buy to feed the deer. But the most awe-inspiring site in Nara is the Daibutsu in Todaiji temple-one of the largest Buddha statues in all of Japan, and it's huge. The entrance to the temple has large ...
