Best Friends (A NOLA High Chronicle)
Alex has always been boy crazy and falls in and out of love on a whim. Jalen is her best friend who has always been popular with the girls and has always been there for Alex. They have been best friends forever because they share a secret that happened years ago when they were 8 years old. They share everything and have never felt anything for each other except a familial love. That all changes at the beginning of their junior year in high school. Alex finds herself feeling Jalen and is scared because she fears the very secret that brought them closer, will keep them apart. Meanwhile Jalen finds himself for the first time attracted to his best friend and has no idea how to handle his feelings. Is their growing attraction worth risking their friendship?
"This is getting crazy", I said to myself, on Friday afternoon as I waited by her locker, only to see her turn around and head the other way when she saw me. I ran after her.
"Will you wait?" I yelled.
"I have to go," Alex said and continued to walk. "I'm meeting Malik."
"Lexi, this is crazy. Why won't you talk to me?"
"Because..." she still had not looked up.
"Would it hurt for you to look at me?"
She nodded, so I touched her chin and pulled her head up. Alex was quietly crying, something that she rarely did. It scared me. I grabbed her by the shoulders and said "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, just leave me alone," and shook my hands off of her shoulders.
"I can't." I put my hands by my side so that I would not touch her. We looked at each other. For some reason I looked at her lips and for a moment I wanted to kiss her and surprisingly I could tell she wanted me to kiss her. Then, it hit me this is Alex. I pulled her into a hug instead. "I'm sorry."
