Dark Revenant - Chronicle of the Five Book O...
Fourteen-year-old Cody Caulder is a frightened, insecure boy who wants nothing more than to find courage and self-worth . . . and he has a difficult decision to make. He can go with his family and confront his fears or stay behind and hide at his uncle's farm. If he stays, he must say goodbye to the two most important people in his life. If he goes, his decision could change him forever.
Cody soon finds himself on an unexpected path filled with mind-bending twists of fate and decision, and his quest for self-discovery becomes a nightmare as he struggles to survive in an extraordinary new world . . . one he never knew existed.
Standing there gawking at the place, I catch movement out of the corner of my eye as a boy walks into the room. He's dressed in ragged jeans and a green-and-white striped t-shirt that's too tight for him.
His freckle pattern looks like someone draped a ribbon of small dots in swoops under his eyes and across his perfect pale nose. I can't stop staring at them. His round, hopeful eyes glimmer as a shadow of something formless and empty swims through the emerald within them.
He sets his bag on the floor as his attention goes to the ceiling, same as mine did, before he looks at me and smiles, his hand held out in front of him. "Hi," he says with a southern drawl. "I'm Joel. Pleased to meet ya."
Wow. This is new. No other boy has ever been pleased to meet me.
I push the hair from my forehead and shake his hand, choking out my name after coming to my senses enough to breathe; his eyes had stolen the breath from me. As he keeps his soft hand in mine, the shyness leaves me-siphoned away by his touch.
