The Third Choice
"I'm sorry Beatrice, but you just aren't cut out for Erudite. I'll give you two choices, work as a lab assistant who fetches materials and cleans spillages; or become factionless."
Beatrice Prior was posed with five choices, three of which she were told were valid. However, each one was destined for a different outcome. The first one would've forced her to act bravely, put her somewhere she would have exceeded. The second, she would have had to be selfless. Something she is, yet not exactly in the way the others around her would have been, were. This was also a place she would be able to survive. But the third choice, the one that only the intelligent choose. It is a place her aptitude lies yet she does not belong. Following her brother, Caleb, she makes the mistake of choosing the third choice, failing the tests they threw at her. Now, she must make another choice; work for others, obeying constant orders from those who see themselves as superior or belong nowhere. The next choice she makes is for the better, she begins to find a place she can belong, a place outside of the society she knew, defying things she was taught. But that falls apart all too quickly as war approaches fast.
