READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED
We teach children about sexual education but not personal boundaries or sexual assault. We tell them, 'Eat your vegetables.' But reprimand them when they say, 'No'. We want them to say 'No' for certain things but punish them when they say 'No' for other things.
We send mixed messages and wonder why there's a problem. We expect them to handle situations that we, as a society, have never prepared them for. Then we're shocked and dumbfounded when people are sexually assaulted.
We want people to tell 'the truth' but don't believe their stories. We attack them, 'Did they say 'No'? What were they wearing? Were they drunk or on drugs? Did they ask for it? How come they didn't report the crime to the police? If it really happened they would have reported it.'
