❝make it look pretty, but teach it to kill.❞
Natalia Romanova is expertly trained in espionage. She lives and works in the Red Room Academy, a top-secret government facility that began in 1932. Natalia was recruited at the age of eleven in the spring of 1939, and has been there since.
Ten years later, she has become one of the three best operatives the Academy has, and because of this they use her often to carry out missions. In the winter of 1944, she begins a series of tasks that she must carry out to prove herself to her trainers and teachers. When she returns, they send her to Moscow to assassinate an 'enemy of the state', as Headmistress Bolshokova puts it.
Natalia obeys. She returns, but is beginning to have doubts. Continuing her training, she is selected for the Graduation Ceremony in the autumn of 1945, but afterwards her loyalties have begun to waver. With her best friend forced away from her and a newfound romance with someone she is forbidden to love, Natalia knows she can't stay in the Academy.
She realizes that the Red Room is like a large hand, crushing her, suffocating her - but Natalia Romanova needs to breathe.
