"Oh geez...I never know how to introduce myself without making it awkward. Um...hi. My name's Tatum. It's not a super common name and yeah I know, you say that name and you think of that stunning celebrity couple, but I swear that's not why my mum named me. I doubt she even knows them. My mum wanted to name me Tatum because it means to bring joy. Which is ironic because I am seriously struggling with depression."
That was my introduction at my first support group session. And yep, I made it super awkward. Depression sucks! Some days you're strong and other days you need someone to be strong for you while you take a breath. That's why I joined the support group. That's why, in spite of all the stigma, I'm doing something about it. And that's why I'm still writing in a diary at aged 18. I don't care if it's juvenile, I need to let my feelings out somehow!
Thanks diary, you're a great listener. Let's hope tomorrow's a better day!
Tatum's Diary is all about a young girls struggle with depression and anxiety. A day to day insight on what it's like to have depression with some parts based on my own story and real life experience with depression. Sharing the highs and lows and personal recovery tips.
The hope for this story is to encourage those who read it, whether you are struggling with a mental illness, know someone who is, or have an interest in this subject. I want the stigma to be broken, we should be able to talk about it unashamedly. It's hard but there is a light at the end of the tunnel and for everyone who's reading and going through a hard time, don't give up! You will make it!
