When his decrepit grandfather commands him to search for a long-lost female cousin, Evelyn Dresdenham, the notorious Marquis of Denver, is very much disinclined to oblige. One night, he unwittingly saves a young lady masquerading herself as a man from trouble, and eventually strikes a bargain with her: one that presents him a very cunning solution to his predicament. Thus, Evelyn induces the orphan Georgie Kentsville to pretend as the cousin he is supposed to be looking for. At first reluctant, Georgie finally agrees and gradually finds herself caught between family intrigues and the allures of High Society. And as she transforms from an impudent, urchin-like girl to a very elegant young lady under his charge, the Marquis is very much pleased indeed... but he is little prepared for the ultimate consequence of his own scheme.
