"I don't understand," she cried. "Why are you doing this to me now? Of all times?"
He kept his head low. In his heart he was screaming to himself, "There has to be another way! Don't do this!" But for Peter, there wasn't. Not really. "I'm sorry, love," his voice leaked hardly any emotion, just enough to sound realistic. "You've been here long enough. You can leave now."
"I don't want to leave. I never wanted to leave."
"There's no place for you in the war I'm about to start," he snapped. His eyes had taken all the liquid from his throat. He felt breakable. "You aren't needed here anymore. I don't need you anymore."
She held her breath, keeping in the tears she wanted to cry. "You promised..." she breathed out.
He swallowed while her gaze was on the floor. "I know," he said. "I'm just fracturing it a little..."
