Scarlett Zanderling's family have been caretakers of the deserted mansion, Dessus de la Mer, all her life. Despite stories billionaire Nicodemus Stoker murdered five women here decades ago, seventeen-year-old Scarlett has never stumbled across a corpse, or found a bloodied confession.
When an earthquake damages the mansion, Stoker's estranged son, Dax, arrives to oversee repairs. Dax has a great butt, a bossy attitude, and a tattoo depicting a mysterious artifact Scarlett discovered the day of the earthquake. Dax doesn't know what his ink means, only that it's been in his skin as long as he can remember.
Dax is determined to use Scarlett's knowledge of the mansion to get an answer about his tattoo. As a Stoker, he could easily fire Scarlett's family if she doesn't keep him happy. But the closer the two get to uncovering the origin of his tattoo, the more Scarlett suspects they are also uncovering details of those long-ago murders, and the evidence doesn't point at Nicodemus Stoker. It points to her father.
