Well, if you decide to break this rule, the dream at the beginning can't be just a hook. It has to be an important part of your story that also advances the plot in some way.

If you're including a dream in the beginning for certain plot reasons, at LEAST let the reader know (italicize it, or some clue like that) so they won't feel tricked/cheated into reading your book.
                              But yeah, best to avoid it entirely, I think
