Sneak Peek -
He stared at me, something stirring in his eyes. Whatever it was didn't settle right in my stomach, and I took an involuntary step back. He noticed this, and proceeded to close the distance between us. This time I willingly stepped away from him, but he matched my movements. We did our little dance until my back was to the cliffs and he was standing right in front of me.
As soon as my back hit the rocks, I reached for my backpack. I always kept pepper spray, for reasons exactly like this. I quickly unclipped the cap and pressed down, letting the burning liquid reach the man's face. I waited for him to take a step back and allow me to run past him, but he didn't move. In fact, all he did was bring his shirt up to his face and wipe off the oozing liquid. I stared in disbelief, glancing between him and my spray. Then, it hit me. Pepper spray worked on humans.
