Tom's eyes flicked almost lazily to the tip of her wand, and his lips curved in something dangerously close to a smile.
His eyes moved back to her face. "Still so quick to defend yourself, Travers," he said, almost fondly.
"Tell me what you're doing," she said through her teeth.
He crouched, picked up a stone from the forest floor, and stood. "Answer a question for me, Selene," he said. "What are your favorite flowers?"
She narrowed her eyes. "Why?"
He just looked at her.
And in turn, she glared at him, refusing to answer.
But the answer bloomed in her thoughts anyway-quiet, unbidden.
Peonies.
He nodded once, almost as if he had heard her thoughts, and raised his wand over the stone. His lips moved, barely audible, a soft and intricate spell she didn't recognize.
And before her eyes, the rock bloomed.
Their paths should never have crossed. But when Professor Slughorn assigns him as her tutor, Selene Evangeline Travers is drawn, unintentionally, into the sights of someone who does not take kindly to surprises.
