In the year 2022, a man invented something ground breaking, a device called NerveGear, that allows people to fully dive into a video game. This man, is Akihiko Kayaba, a man who secretly has a twisted mind. Sword Art Online is the most anticipated VRMMORPG game that was created for the NerveGear. One month before the full release of the game, 10 000 people were given the closed beta to Sword Art Online.

One of these people were Y/n L/n, a player that would reach the highest floor out of all the other beta testers. Month after the beta test closed the game became available to the public and sold out in an instant, and of course Y/n was one of the first people to log-on into the game and soon after, the twisted mind of Kayaba came to the light as he traps all the players in Aincrad and everyone who dies in game, dies in real life.
