Naruto is determined to uncover what Shikamaru truly wants. Despite Shikamaru's outward nonchalance and apparent disinterest in everything, Naruto senses there's more beneath the surface.
Drunk and curious one night, Naruto asks,
"What the hell do you seek, Shikamaru?"

Shikamaru hesitates, puzzled and struggling with his words. The guilt and anguish he feels because of his marriage (of convenience) to Temari weigh heavily on him. He struggles with his conflicted emotions and sense of duty, and yet having Naruto by his side is all he truly desires, even if it means to keep it a secret within his heart.
