Pete's Yaai had always told him that he was special. She would sing him to sleep as the sun rose, petting his hair. Pete always knew she was afraid of him, though. He could feel it in the way her hand trembled, the way her voice shook a little on the high notes.
Pete would never hurt her. He had told her that, again and again, until he realized the futility. It might have been easier to address if he could just pinpoint something he had done to make her fear him.
