I divert my eyes from the book to James who is staring back at me with a smile "What?" I answer what I hope is a rhetorical question.

"I know that if I ever get in trouble you'll be right by my side. And I'll have company for the night in the jail cell"

"That's where you're wrong" I lay down my pen "I will be on the other side refusing to pay bail and saying I told you so and you should have listened to me"

"So I'll take that as a no for making my Math teacher disappear before the next test?"
