With the safety of her old life a distant memory, Morana must reconcile the girl she used to be with the woman she is becoming. She can no longer naively believe that hiding in the shadows will keep her safe; she must carefully balance using her magic for protection and using it to gain power.

That's a line that is becoming increasingly blurred the longer she remains a captive of the king. Kuga, the king's Winter Woman, is commanded to train her in the ways of Deathsingers so she can enter Araphel, and Morana discovers that the Banshee was not all that different from her once. Without her dearest friends and her fierce protector, she has only herself and her dark magic to rely on to stay alive-a task made even more difficult by revenge seeking soldiers and the mad prince she once loved.

But one thing hasn't changed. Vyta and Dycidium remain unlit, and until their fires shine bright again, the world will continue to unravel. She is the only one who stands a chance of entering Araphel and staying alive long enough to restore the portal, but even if she is successful, the fight won't be over. No matter what Tievel claims, the king's interest in the portal goes beyond righting the wrongs of the past.

To have a chance at stopping him, she knows she must do whatever it takes to become strong enough to stop him. And if that means fighting fire with fire, then she will embrace the darkness within, becoming the very monster she's always feared she was.
