"You, Carlita Horner," he said, his voice low and earnest, his stutter softening, "are t-the only one I find myself staring at, even at the most unlikely times. It's you. Not Beverly, not any other girl. You. You've been by my side forever. How could I not see you? You've always made me feel less lonely than I am. That's one of a million reasons I like you."

His confession washed over me, more powerful than the quarry water. His wet hair was stuck to his forehead, making him look more vulnerable and attractive than ever.

"Are you saying," I asked, a cheeky, disbelieving smile spreading across my face, "that you like-like me?"
