In Norland, the dead don't stay dead.
A marauding army of deadmen ravage the grim landscape of Norland, and all that can stand between them and utter destruction are the Shieldmen, a desolate collection of criminals sent away to a fate worse than death by Norland's surrounding neighbours, who themselves struggle to keep the dead from their borders.
In Norland, there are no heroes. Not truly. Just the dead and those that will soon join them. Harker is a Shieldman that must traverse this dying country if he is to warn his comrades of the dead army's spreading evil, and the lone dark figure that leads them. Countless dangers loom around him, and it's not just the dead out to kill him. Bandits, ghouls, the ravaged monsters that lurk in Norland's bloody fields, all stand before him.
Outside of Norland, Lyla is trying to forget the past horrors of her old life as a slave upon a pirate lord's ship, searching for a lost artefact belonging to the Gods. But after meeting one such God, and ridding herself of her past, Lyla must make her way into Norland to uncover the mystery of her dreams, where a pale faced woman veiled in black is beckoning her.
A horrific adventure lies ahead for both of them, where the fate of Norland and the world is tied to their capability to survive in a world where the dead don't stay dead.
"Epitaph" is a tale set in the "Dead King" universe, set many years before it's older sister "The Dead King". Cover by the marvellous AliceNACT.
