(UPDATES EVERY MONDAY!) The memory-stealing Aster were banished long before El's birth, but it's their fault Mama is dying. The only thing El can do is sit in her dank cell and dream about what freedom might be like, away from slavery. Mama has months left when El and her older sister, Rhea, are given the chance to leave. All they have to do is complete a series of tasks that might kill them.
El would rather die fighting for freedom, so without thinking about Rhea or Mama, she accepts. But the tasks take a bloody turn, and El knows that soft, overprotective Rhea won't be able to survive them without turning callous-hardened like El. So they run.
The longer she is immersed in this world of secrets and spies, the more El realizes that she can't stand by and let the Aster experiments continue. She and Rhea are determined to stop them and save the people like Mama.
But with the slave keepers searching for their runaways, the crown in a deadly hunt against rebels, and the return of the Aster, El's not sure how long she and her sister can last without forgetting themselves.
If El doesn't save Mama, she might lose Rhea forever, too. And without her family, maybe freedom isn't worth the price.
