Murah Elkas, nominal prince of Falthus (one small world in the Empire), wants nothing to do with any of it. Until more arrives, in the form of the Empire, which has decided that for Falthus' and Sarren-en's own good, they're going to be forced into partnership (whether they like it or not). And partnership, to irritating representative of the empire Lilin Euphi, means an arranged marriage between the worlds.

But there is more political intrigue going on here than simply the arranged marriages, the new political structures, and the organization of an empire (as if that weren't enough). Can Murah and Yuun learn to work together and move past the fires of the past? Can they save their two planets from the threat of the empire, and the machinations going on around them? And when a catastrophe in the ruling family forces Lilin Euphi into the spotlight, can their relationship even survive?
