When a young adrenaline-seeking Slayer, Johnna Ravenna, pulls a strange creature from the ruins of an ancient building, she knows she's in over her head. But what's an adventure without stakes? Still, taking the creature known as Marsy proves to paint a brighter target on her back than she can handle. A mystery enemy attacks from the shadows; a stranger demands custody of Marsy; and amidst it all Johnna is trying her best to keep a step ahead of her school's overbearing Dean.

The answers to all her problems may lay in Marsy's shrouded past. Unfortunately, despite their otherwise perfect memory, Marsy remembers only scraps of life before their first death.
