Am I a sea witch? Am I really a monster?
I saw my target drifting through the waves. He was a sailor, the typical sort with skin that was turned to leather by saltwater and eyes made cloudy by staring so long into the merciless sun. He was poor with a laborer's hands covered with calluses and feet that were torn up at the heels.
But he had broad shoulders and a torn shirt which revealed muscles all along his strong, workman's stomach. He had a set of rosary beads woven around his neck. The crucifix part was made out of solid gold, a foolish luxury considering that out here on the ocean, nobody would be able to see it anyways. It must have been given to him on land then, a Christmas gift? A parting gift? A token of gratitude? I wondered who had given those to him. Perhaps it had been a sister. Perhaps it had been a lover.
I tossed my long hair over my shoulders, so long that it tickled the base of my silvery scales. I stretched my tail out and hid it beneath the murky ocean water. But I let the bad half of my face hide in the shadows of my long, dark hair. I let the scales, the mark of my mother's sin, hide within the cruel darkness where they belonged.
