"You must be crazy!" said family and friends when we told them we were going to backpack through Colombia for six weeks. "Colombia is a dangerous country!" they insisted. "You can be robbed and even kidnapped." They continued. But we had done our homework and we would prove them wrong. We partied on the streets of Barranquilla during Carnival, spent Valentines day in colourful colonial Cartagena, and went fishing for piranhas in the Amazon.

Canadian, eh? Me, too. I haven't been to Colombia yet but it sounds really interesting.

Colombia is a place of contrasts: the old colonial towns and the new modern cities; the very rich and the very poor; the snow-capped peaks of the sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the hot Caribbean beaches; the rushed pace of Bogotans and the slow, relaxed one of the Amazonians.

I'm really enjoying this so far! I would recommend breaking the paragraphs up a bit, since I know that long paragraphs can act repulsively. Your descriptions are very detailed and create an image for the reader, but still leave space for imagination. :D
