"Annie... you did go on that blind date yesterday, right?" Melanie asked. She sounded like a mother scolding her child.
"Yeah. I told you. I went. Nothing special happened. We ate, then parted."
Indeed, the night before, when Annie came home, she had simply reported that the date wasn't too bad, but that the two of them didn't have much in common and just parted casually. No contact information exchanged. Nothing. One meeting, and that was it. Yet, her boyfriend, Josh, didn't make it sound like it went fine when he called her last night. Apparently, Derek came home traumatized by the idea of dating again. She had a hard time believing that Annie could have caused so much damage in one date. Moreover, so many things didn't add up.
"Uh-huh. So, who the hell is Gloria?"
Gloria? Annie pondered for a moment, then remembered she had used a fake name during the date.
"Oh. Yeah, I used a fake name. Just in case the guy's a psycho and wants to stalk me. Or if we didn't get along, he can't track me down either."
The irony was that she was the creepy one. The good news was that he wouldn't be able to track her down. No regret about using a fake name.
Annie didn't want to go on a blind date. Neither did Derek. But while Derek was willing to put up with it normally, Annie decided to sabotage it.
When Annie arrived in Seattle, the only thing she had in mind was to complete her internship so that she could get her credits and be one step closer to graduating. It never even crossed her mind that she would make friends. Or go anywhere beyond friendship.
