From when I was young, Bat Masterson was a particular hero of mine -- I'm not quite sure why - not the Gene Barry television character but the real historical figure. It was only when I got older that I found that the longest job that Bat ever held was not as a western lawman but as a New York City newspaper columnist. For all of his years in New York, my grandfather, who died the year before I was born, was an New York City policeman. These stories are pure fiction and include as a character the famed boxing announcer who was Bat's office boy and, coincidently, had me on his radio show when I was 14 years old.
