On June 18th, 1998, I found myself sitting among a sea of over a thousand white chairs, caps, and gowns. It was graduation day at Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley, California, and I was excited to be wearing a white gown, which signified my graduating with honors and achieving a cumulative GPA above a 3.5. It was a great day for me because I was the first person in my family to graduate high school (both of my parents were high school dropouts). It was also a proud moment for me because life through high school had not been necessarily been a walk in the park.

My first memory of life was when I was four years old, when my mother (who has struggled with schizophrenia all throughout her adult life) had a nervous breakdown, kidnapped me, and took me on a high speed police chase through the streets of Fresno, California.
