For the super-secret End of War Project inside the United States government, such a reality is already here. The project models out how artificial intelligence can overcome dangerous and morally sensitive war scenarios with algorithms and automation. The centerpieces are "autonomous combat machines," or ACMs, that look like humans but function like supercomputers. After a string of brilliant successes in the field of combat, the End of War Project is preparing to reveal itself to the public, but something unusual stands in the way. Against their programming, the ACMs start exhibiting all-too-human signs of apprehension, guilt and compassion as they're pushed to perform ever more extreme tasks. The human leaders of the End of War Project race to find who "hacked" the ACMs, but what they find is even more startling--and revealing--than they could ever imagine.

The company wants Ellie to go and find the kid, and Ellie doesn't know if she can. The one rule she's stuck to all her working life is to never to go to America, but now she might have to. The Anthros broke free and took what was left of the 'White Mist,' the substance that created them, and put it into the planet's air supply. Long story short, most animals worldwide have begun transforming into Anthros, and started devastating the world's militaries before attacking cities. Humanity is now facing extinction with their last millions while the Anthro civilization is over 2 Billion strong and counting. The war between Humans and Anthros has lasted for over 50 years, and while humans may be disadvantaged against the Anthros higher strength, speed, endurance, and intelligence, they still beat Anthros with improvisation, adaptability, and tactics. The war has destroyed all four Eastern continents, leaving behind a creature both Humans and Anthros call Reapers, who are husks of the person they were. The Anthros have near complete control over North America and are fighting Humanity in South America, but the main human bases are located on the Hawaiian islands. With death seeming inevitable for human kind, can nothing stop humanity from extinction? Zero has just graduated from high school with good marks and a scholarship.
