Five black students make history as the first to integrate a prestigious school for gifted students in 1950's Vermont.

Anita Prescott is one of the those students, a young girl whose strength and leadership keeps the isolated group together. She finds her wary stance towards white people tested, when she falls for a handsome and thoughtful white student.

In a time when loving someone of another race wasn't just frowned upon, but dangerous, a pair of young lovers must find a way to press through, with the help of good friends.

I like the imagery of this prologue, its descriptive language--man's reflection over his life, culminating from the bowel of civil anarchy. Yes, those of us never having witnessed the things seen by Nathan ought to count ourselves among the blessed and fotrtunate.
