This is a piece of flash fiction for the Marriott Hotels' Travel Brilliantly: Artificial Intelligence Story Contest. The theme is to write about AI in a positive light. In other words, no AI uprising where sentient robots wipe out humanity Terminator-style. Sorry, not going to happen, not on my watch.
Anyway, all kidding aside, I wanted to write this story because I wanted to explore a world where AI's like self-driving cars have become commonplace, and more elaborate AI's that tap into the human experience are possibility, but by no means a certainty. In other words, I wanted to write about AI's that are very much on the verge of performing functions that almost feel like magic. Of course, as Dorothy, our main character fears, those kinds of AI's might not be real. In fact, they might just be snake oil. But maybe... just maybe... the AI at Progenitor Storage can give Dorothy the real thing.
Enjoy the story! And please, tell me what you think in the comments. I'd really love your feedback on this one. Thanks!
