" Raegan Fields had never been good at making friends. middle school had been her time to hide and be on her own. but now it's time for high school, and she can't make it through those four years on her own. not only is it a new school year, but her step mother and father had been transferred to South Central Los Angeles. that meant new school, new neighborhood, and what she hoped would be a chance for reinvention. high school was one thing, but her new neighborhood was something else she needed to adjust to. being the only Irish American teenage girl in a neighborhood full of blacks and Hispanics and gangs wasn't something she signed up for, but it's where she was now. when she arrives in her new neighborhood, she meets her new neighbor Cesar Diaz who soon introduces her to his friends Ruby and Jamal. as time goes on, she makes friends with the trio. but when Cesar's attitude changes due to the family gang he is forced to join, the others have no choice but to cut him off. Raegan having no other friends, had of course followed after Ruby and Jamal. when their friend Monse returns from writing camp, she finds that the crew has lost a member and added one other. as the crew tries to survive high school while on a road of triumph, pain and newness, Raegan can't seem to focus on any of it as she discovers her feelings for the smart and dorky Hispanic boy, Ruby Martinez. Ruby, on the other hand, is confused on what he wants and how he feels. convinced that the universe is out to get him, he can't decide who he really wants. his "cousin" Olivia who is living at his house and in his room, or Raegan, the 'Barbie On The Block' as he likes to call her.
