You lie down on the gurney, clad only in standard issue scrubs. The nurses slip on a head cap and tuck you in. They begin to wheel you to the operation room. The anesthesiologist greets you with a smile and slips a mask over your nose and mouth. He tells you to start counting. Slowly your eyes close. The anesthesiologist gives a thumbs up. The head surgeon turn to his nurse. "Scalpel please," And I sit behind a glass wall, peering into this fantastical world. The walls are lined by monitors, zooming up close to the operating field. We all watch, all of us medical students, as the surgeon approaches the field. He lifts the scalpel and makes the first cut... This is a collection of short stories of incidents a medical student experiences throughout this long journey to becoming a doctor.
